When it comes to finding the perfect mother of the bride gown, one crucial step is often overlooked-taking accurate measurements. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of measuring yourself properly to ensure that the gown you choose fits flawlessly, making you feel confident and radiant on that special day.
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Before you start measuring, make sure you have a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, and a notepad to jot down your measurements.
Step 2: Wear Appropriate Undergarments
Wear the undergarments you plan to wear with the gown. This ensures that your measurements reflect the true shape of your body when you wear the gown.
One of our clients was concerned that a dress she loved did not fit her properly. She scheduled a Facetime consultation to hear from our creative director Leora to see what could be done. As soon as Leora saw her with the dress on through facetime, she realized that the client was trying on the dress without a bra. Due to the lack of undergarments, this altered the fit entirely when worn on the customer. With Leora’s advice, the customer then tried on the gown with the appropriate bra, and it ended up looking fabulous on her! She was pleasantly surprised, extremely relieved, and even ended up wearing the dress to her son's wedding! All it took was some guidance and reassurance.
Step 3: Take Bust Measurements
Wear a well-fitting bra and measure around the fullest part of your bust.
Make sure the measuring tape is snug but not too tight, and parallel to the ground.
Step 4: Measure Your Waist
Locate your natural waist, typically the narrowest part of your torso.
Measure around this area, maintaining a comfortable fit without pulling the tape too tightly.
Step 5: Determine Your Hip Measurement
Find the widest part of your hips and measure around, ensuring the tape is parallel to the ground. Keep the tape snug but not constricting to get an accurate hip measurement.
Step 6: Length Consideration
Even if the dress is too long, it can always be shortened! For floor-length gowns, measure from the base of your neck to the floor, wearing the shoes you plan to wear with the gown. For tea-length or knee-length gowns, measure to the desired hemline.
Step 7: Double-Check and Record:
Take a moment to double-check all your measurements and if possible, have someone assist you for precise results.
Consult the Size Chart
Refer to the specific size chart for each dress and choose the right size based on your measurements. If you are in between sizes it is best to size up. It will be easier to zip up and access if the dress has potential.
